About Leowood Art

Leonardo Cappellini is the creative heart of Leowood Art. His passion for wood working, nature and sustainability all come together in each of his wood vases and wood sculptures. Leonardo works from his home and workshop in the hills above Florence. He finds inspiration and solace in the woods that surround him. Leonardo continually evolves as an artisan, driven by his desire to explore all that he and his art can be. He has shown his work throughout Italy, has collaborated with an artisan from Japan, growing his craft beyond his Italian heritage. There are no pretenses with Leonardo, he does what he loves because his passion is strong that he must do it. Each creation is an extension of his passion, his dreams and his desire to give new life to trees that are ready for a new beginning.

The Wood Sculpture Sphere is a truly unique sculpture. In the Wood Sculpture some sections of the original bark have been preserved, and small white mushrooms found on the surface tell of the natural life that persisted in the tree. The Sphere Wood Sculpture is not only an artistic representation, but also a tribute to the history and intrinsic beauty of this linden tree. Through the sculpture, the memory of the tree is preserved and celebrated, offering a new dimension to its past existence.

Exquisite Craftsmanship

The artisan Leonardo masterfully carved the wood sculpture out of Linden wood, also known as lime wood in Europe or Bass wood in America.  The working process included burning and brushing of the turned part, a technique that enhances the wood grain and imparts a unique texture. Next, some shellac to give the surface a glossy finish. Leonardo always uses reclaimed wood and carries out each step of the process from drying to carving, to finishing with his own hands, full of passion for the wood.

The Inspiration

This spherical wood sculpture is made using the collar of a linden tree from Cercina, Florence. The collar represents the transition zone between the roots and the trunk of the tree, a part rich in history and vitality. In an homage to the earth from where the wood came from, ancient design and the beauty of natural wood Leonardo created this beautiful art sculpture.
